These thyroid symptoms listed below are extremely common and cause lots of suffering. It is possible to reduce or eliminate them when they are properly diagnosed and treated.

Abnormal swallowing sensation

Pain or discomfort when swallowing or turning your head could be a possible sign of subacute thyroiditis.

Abnormal throat sensations

Abnormal sensation of the pharynx, hoarseness and sore throat play an important role in the symptomatology of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.

Anxiety or panic attacks

Thyroid problems may lead to anxiety and panic attacks. Thyroid disorders may cause many changes to your body, your emotions, your physical sensations and more.

Arthritis or joint pain

People with the most common form of hypothyroidism have a higher risk of developing other autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis.

Cold hands and feet

Cold hands and feet may occur when there’s a drop in thyroid hormones.

Constipation

Constipation is a problem that can be particularly troublesome when you have an underactive thyroid, a condition called hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism slows down many of your body’s systems, including digestion and elimination.

Decreased memory or concentration

Brain fog— a term which describes sluggish mental reactions, difficulty
concentrating, and a compromised memory may be experienced with an underactive thyroid.

Decreased sex drive

Both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can lead to low libido, or lack of interest in sex. This could range in severity and could either turn into erectile dysfunction, difficulty in getting an orgasm or a change in how you feel about sex in general.

Depression

The relation between thyroid function and depression has long been recognized. Patients with thyroid disorders are more prone to develop depressive symptoms and conversely depression may be accompanied by various subtle thyroid abnormalities.

Difficulty losing weight

If you have low thyroid levels, your metabolism tends to go down—and that’s when you start to gain weight and have low energy.

Dry skin and hair

According to a report on hypothyroidism in a 2010 edition of the medical journal Hippokratia, 77 percent of people with the condition said they had dry skin, 41 percent experienced hair loss, and 72 percent gained weight.

Extreme tiredness

Fatigue is a common symptom of thyroid disease. It’s often a debilitating, relentless exhaustion that impairs your daily functioning.

Fatigue

Fatigue is a nearly-universal symptom of hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid), occurring as a result of the decrease in thyroid hormone production.

Fluid Retention

One of the most common causes of fluid retention (if not the most common) is low body temperature. Low body temperature is the common denominator between thyroid and fluid retention. The water retention in hypothyroidism can also be caused by adrenal fatigue. The functioning of adrenal gland is affected in autoimmune thyroid conditions and in hypothyroidism.

Frequent colds and sore throats

Autoimmune conditions may lead to frequent colds and sore throats.

Hair loss or thinning

Severe and prolonged hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can cause loss of hair. The loss is diffuse and involves the entire scalp rather than discrete areas. The hair appears uniformly sparse.

Headaches or migraines

The Journal of Head and Face Pain found that thyroid and Migraines had a strong connection with 21% of people who suffered a pre-existing headache condition were more likely to develop hypothyroidism. For migraine sufferers, that number jumps to 41%.

Hot or cold intolerance

Intolerance to cold or an inability to stay warm is a common indicator of hypothyroidism. Hyperthyroidism causes overactive cell function resulting in multiple symptoms including sensitivity to heat. While this is the most common presentation of symptoms, the opposite is possible as well.

Hypoglycemia

Although people with hyperthyroidism and Graves’ Disease can develop hypoglycemia, it does seem to be more common in people with hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. The reason for this is because thyroid hormone helps to stimulate gluconeogenesis, and so when there is a deficiency of thyroid hormone then this will be affected.

Inappropriate weight gain

Low thyroid hormone may lead to high blood sugar a condition known as insulin resistance. High insulin levels lead to weight gain.

Insomnia

When it comes to your thyroid and sleep, most people associate an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) with insomnia because it can cause feelings of nervousness and anxiety, making it harder to fall asleep. However, what many patients don’t realize is that an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) is more commonly associated with insomnia.

Infertility
There is sometimes a link between hypothyroidism — when you have an underactive thyroid gland — and infertility in women. With hypothyroidism, your thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough of certain important hormones. Low levels of thyroid hormone can interfere with the release of an egg from your ovary (ovulation), which impairs fertility.
Irregular periods
Both hyper- and hypothyroidism may result in menstrual disturbances. Your thyroid helps control your menstrual cycle. Too much or too little thyroid hormone can make your periods very light, heavy, or irregular. Thyroid disease also can cause your periods to stop for several months or longer, a condition called amenorrhea.
Irritabililty
Irritability and anxiety are common symptoms of hyperthyroidism.
Sadness
Thyroid disease can affect your mood — primarily causing either sadness, anxiety or depression. Generally, the more severe the thyroid disease, the more severe the mood changes.
Sensitivity to cold
About 40% of underactive thyroid individuals feel more sensitive to cold than usual.
Sweating abnormalities
Night sweats may be associated with thyroid disorders.
Unhealthy nails
Thyroid dysfunction can also affect your nails, causing abnormality in nail shape, nail color, of attachment to the nail bed. Pay attention if you experience ongoing hangnails, ridges, splitting, peeling, or even dry cuticles.
Weakness
Muscle weakness may be associated with thyroid disorder.

“Undiagnosed thyroid disease may put patients at risk for certain serious conditions, such as cardiovascular diseases, osteoporosis and infertility.”

Indigo Integrative Health Clinic is a medical practice staffed with doctors who care.

It is not the typical “medical factory” where you sit in a giant waiting room filling out forms before you are seen by a harried doctor who spends five minutes with you and sends you off with a pharmaceutical prescription. Indigo’s providers do a true consultation with you as a collaborator in your own health care.

A typical new patient consultation consists of the opportunity for you to describe in detail your symptoms, how those symptoms make you feel and how having them affects your life.

At Indigo we treat the whole person, NOT just your symptoms. Integrative medicine differs from most conventional medical practices in that identifying the cause of the symptoms is the primary focus of the diagnostic efforts.

Treatment is designed to address the root cause, not just to interrupt, or mask the symptoms. If your goal is to return to a state of vibrant health, make an appointment to see our doctors and get the correct diagnosis, treatment and care you deserve.

You don’t have to settle for feeling less than your best.

With our holistic, integrative and detailed diagnostics leading the way, you can alleviate thyroid imbalance issues and regain your health. Our advanced data interpretation techniques help us to accurately assess your thyroid function and determine which therapies may lead to the best health outcomes.
