Our Approach to Gut Health

Indigo's personalized care blends functional medicine, integrative nutrition, and evidence-informed protocols — focused on the whole person, not just the symptom.

We don't guess. We test. We evaluate the full picture of your gut health:

  • Gut microbiome composition and diversity
  • Intestinal permeability (leaky gut markers)
  • Potential pathogens: bacterial, parasitic, yeast/fungal overgrowth
  • SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth)
  • Digestive enzyme function and stomach acid status
  • Inflammatory markers and immune activation
  • Food sensitivities (IgG/IgA panel)
  • Nutritional deficiencies linked to malabsorption
How It Works

Your Personalized Gut-Healing Plan

01

Advanced Gut Testing & Root-Cause Discovery

We use functional and specialty labs to identify:

  • Comprehensive functional medicine stool analysis
  • Pathogen testing: bacteria, parasites, H. pylori, yeast/fungal overgrowth
  • SIBO breath testing where clinically indicated
  • Food sensitivity panel (IgG/IgA antibodies)
  • Intestinal permeability and inflammation markers
  • Nutritional and metabolic labs related to gut function

This ensures we are not guessing — but treating with precision.

02

Personalized, Multifaceted Treatment Plans

Your protocol may include:

  • Therapeutic elimination and gut-healing nutrition plans
  • Medical-grade, clinician-directed supplements
  • Botanical antimicrobials
  • Gut-lining repair protocols
  • Microbiome repair protocols
  • Lifestyle modifications: stress, sleep, movement, and more

Every plan is tailored to your biology, your medical history, and your goals.

03

Whole-Body Integration

Your gut doesn't function in isolation. We address the full picture.

  • Addressing the gut-brain axis: mood, cognition, and stress response
  • Hormonal and immune system connections to gut health
  • Sleep and energy optimization linked to digestive function
  • Long-term dietary strategy for sustainable gut wellness

When we support the whole system, the gut has what it needs to heal.

04

Ongoing Monitoring & Long-Term Gut Resilience

Healing is not linear. We monitor progress and adjust as you heal.

  • Retest to confirm pathogen clearance and microbiome improvement
  • Gradual food reintroduction guided by your clinical team
  • Maintenance protocols to prevent relapse
  • Continued optimization of immune and digestive function
  • Restored balance

Our goal is lasting strength and stability, not temporary symptom relief.

"I was close to giving up to having a 'normal' life after multiple separate but related health issues, and never getting a comprehensive review of my entire body through traditional medicine. I have only been in the care of Indigo for a few months, but am now looking forward to my future potential as a healthy human! If you’re on the fence, reach out."

We can help if you:

  • Have been told your labs are normal - but you still feel terrible and know something is wrong.
  • Carry an IBS diagnosis — but have never had SIBO testing, microbiome analysis, or food sensitivity evaluation.
  •  Struggle with chronic bloating, gas, or unpredictable bowels — and are exhausted by symptom management that never lasts.
  •  Suspect food sensitivities — but haven't had comprehensive testing or a guided elimination protocol.
  • Have tried probiotics, elimination diets, and supplements — without a clear roadmap or clinical guidance.
  • ✓  Want a whole-body approach — one that addresses the gut-brain axis, immune function, and underlying drivers, not just your digestive tract.
  • ✓  Want a whole-body approach — one that addresses the gut-brain axis, immune function, and underlying drivers, not just your digestive tract.

Commonly Asked Questions

Your Questions Answered

If you're living with chronic digestive issues, you probably have questions about how we work, what to expect, and whether this approach is right for you. We've answered the most common ones below.

  • What is the difference between functional medicine gut testing and standard GI testing?

Standard GI testing typically screens for serious structural disease — like polyps, ulcers, or tumors. Functional medicine stool testing goes deeper: it assesses your microbiome composition, identifies potential bacterial, parasitic, or fungal pathogens, evaluates digestive enzyme activity, measures intestinal inflammation markers, and assesses intestinal permeability. Most patients who come to us have had normal colonoscopies, endoscopies, or standard labs — and are still suffering. We use different tools, asking different questions.

  • What is SIBO, and how do I know if I have it?

SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) occurs when bacteria overgrow in the small intestine — where they don't belong. It's a leading driver of bloating, gas, abdominal distension, and alternating constipation and diarrhea, and is estimated to be present in a large proportion of IBS patients. Diagnosis is confirmed through breath testing measuring hydrogen, methane, or hydrogen sulfide gas. If SIBO is suspected, our clinicians will recommend appropriate testing.

  • What is leaky gut, and is it a real diagnosis?

Intestinal permeability — commonly called leaky gut — occurs when the gut lining breaks down, allowing undigested particles and toxins to enter the bloodstream and trigger systemic inflammation, food sensitivities, and immune dysregulation. It is measurable through specific functional lab markers. While not yet a formal conventional diagnosis, the underlying mechanisms are well-documented in scientific literature.

  • Do you treat IBD (Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis)?

We provide integrative support for IBD patients — focused on reducing inflammation, gut-lining healing, microbiome optimization, and addressing nutritional deficiencies. We complement, not replace, your gastroenterology care. Patients currently managed by a specialist are welcome.

  • What does food sensitivity testing involve?

We use a specialized test that measures white blood cell reactivity to specific foods, chemicals, and additives — capturing a broader range of immune reactions than standard panels. Results guide a structured elimination and reintroduction protocol tailored to your specific triggers. Food sensitivity testing is always interpreted alongside your full clinical picture.

  • What supplements or botanicals might be part of my protocol?

Your protocol is fully individualized based on your test results and clinical presentation. It may include medical-grade supplements, botanical antimicrobials, and gut-repair nutrients — all clinician-directed and evidence-informed. Supplements complement, not replace, dietary and lifestyle changes.

  • How long does the gut-healing process typically take?

Timelines vary. Some patients notice meaningful improvements within weeks; others with more complex presentations need several months of guided work. Our focus is lasting healing — not a quick fix.

  • Will I need to follow a specific diet?

Yes — dietary changes are central to gut healing, and your plan is tailored to your test results and clinical goals. Our team provides practical, personalized guidance. The goal is a sustainable long-term strategy, not a permanent restrictive diet.

  • Is this care covered by insurance?

Functional medicine testing and integrative care are typically not covered by standard insurance plans. Some lab tests may be partially reimbursable — we recommend checking your out-of-network benefits. You will receive a Super Bill for consultations.

  • I've already tried probiotics, elimination diets, and supplements. Will this be different?

Almost certainly — yes. Most patients come to us without a clear diagnosis or clinical roadmap. The difference at Indigo is that we test first, identify the root cause, and build every recommendation around your results — not a generic protocol.

  • Do you work with patients who are also seeing a gastroenterologist or other specialists?

Yes — many of our patients are under the care of other specialists. We view our role as complementary, focused on root-cause assessment and individualized protocols that support your overall care plan.
